More Time supported a young person from Waythrough’s Education Centre with a six-week Facilities Management placement. They arrived anxious and quiet, unsure of what to expect. With steady support from their mentor, each small task- completing maintenance checks, organising equipment, taking part in toolbox talks- helped them slowly recognise their own capability.
The blended training became a safe and encouraging space where they could ask questions, practise new skills, and build belief in themselves, giving them a renewed sense of pride and possibility.
By the end of the placement, their transformation was remarkable. They achieved 100% attendance, began arriving early, volunteered for tasks, and contributed confidently as part of the FM team. More Time was able to provide ongoing flexible employment which gave the young person a measure of stability, independence, and a clearer path toward future opportunities.
The placement delivered measurable economic value and significant personal development gains. The participant’s increased confidence, improved wellbeing, accredited training achievement, and successful employment outcome demonstrate strong short- and long-term social value impact. We also know that students with four or more meaningful employer encounters are 83% less likely to become NEET and that work experience can increase a young person’s future earnings by up to 16%.
Based on HM Treasury Green Book, the value of a work placement is rarely a single fixed number; it is a calculated Social Value based on several components. However, current industry benchmarks and government-aligned databases provide the following estimated “unit costs” for a single young person.
Value Category | Estimated £ Value | Source |
Total Social Value | £42,000 | MeasureUp / UK Social Value Bank |
Fiscal Saving (NEET) | £16,500 | Social Value Act Case Study |
Wellbeing Impact | £7,000 | HMT Green Book WELLBY Guidance |
